PV solar systems that operate off the grid have their own advantages and disadvantages. Excess energy that is off grid is routed and stored in deep cycle batteries to be used later when the electrical needs of the home exceed the solar systems capability. Advantages include: 1) Homeowners unable to acquire electricity from a power company due to their location can create their own. 2) Homes that use off grid systems are free from rolling blackouts/ brownouts. Disadvantages include: 1) Although off grid solar systems are eligible for the federal tax credit, they are not eligible for the state rebate. 2) Deep cycle batteries are expensive and do not last very long (4-8 years) before they need to be replaced.
